What is patellofemoral pain?
This is a general term used to describe pain caused when the kneecap (patella) does not move correctly over the knee joint. What can cause patellofemoral pain? The onset can be due to a combination of several factors such as muscle imbalance around the knee joint, overtraining/overload, muscle weakness or tightness or altered biomechanics of the lower limb. What does it feel like? Usually presents as sharp or diffuse pain in the front of the knee, particularly with loaded activities such as running or squatting. Swelling, cracking/popping and a feeling of giving way may also be present. What is the treatment for patellofemoral pain? Physiotherapy treatment will depend on the cause of your pain, but can include strapping, manual therapy, and a stretching and strengthening exercise programme. The time frame for recovery also depends on the underlying cause but pain usually resolves within 8 weeks. |
