Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture

What is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)?
A thickened band-like structure deep inside the knee joint which functions to provide stability to the knee, limits rotational movement and resists excessive forward movement of the lower leg bone.

What type of injury can damage the ACL?
Typically landing from a jump or suddenly pivoting or decelerating. These injuries are common in multiple sports such as football or netball.

What does it feel like?
Usually presents as severe pain deep inside the knee joint, commonly associated with an audible popping, swelling and instability or giving way of the knee.

What is the treatment for a ACL Rupture?
Initial physiotherapy treatment may consist of strapping/bracing, pain management and swelling strategies, as well as strategies to maintain range of movement and adequate strength around the knee. Depending on your goals and activity levels, surgery may be required following an assessment by an Orthopedic specialist. Following surgery, rehabilitation follows a 9-12 month protocol which should start soon after your surgery following advice from your surgeon.
