Lateral Collateral Ligament Injury

What is the lateral collateral ligament (LCL)?
A thickened band like structure on the outside of the knee that crosses the knee joint and functions to provide stability to the knee and resist joint movement when force is applied to the inside of the knee.

What type of injury can damage the LCL?
Typically a force to the inside of the knee joint or a twisting force.

What does it feel like?
Usually presents as superficial pain and tenderness on the outside of the knee and potentially some instability, swelling or clicking sensations.

What is the treatment for a LCL injury?
Physiotherapy treatment may consist of strapping, pain management and swelling strategies, improving range of movement, and strengthening the muscles around the knee joint. Mild-moderate LCL injuries usually resolve in 4-6 weeks, but more severe injuries may take up to 12 weeks of rehabilitation to return to higher levels of activity.
