What is the medial collateral ligament (MCL)?
A thickened band like structure on the inside of the knee that crosses the knee joint and functions to provide stability to the knee and resist joint movement when force is applied to the outside of the knee. What type of injury can damage the MCL? Typically a force to the outside of the knee joint or a twisting force. What does it feel like? Usually presents as superficial pain and tenderness on the inside of the knee and potentially some instability, swelling or clicking sensations. What is the treatment for a MCL injury? Physiotherapy treatment may consist of strapping, pain management and swelling strategies, improving range of movement, and strengthening the muscles around the knee joint. Mild-moderate MCL injuries usually resolve in 4-6 weeks, but more severe injuries may take up to 12 weeks of rehabilitation to return to higher levels of activity. |
