Knee Meniscus Injury

What is the meniscus?
There are two menisci in each knee joint. They are C-shaped rubbery discs which help with shock absorption and stability.

What type of injury can damage the meniscus?
Usually injuries involving twisting or turning quickly while loading the knee, or a direct contact to the knee while bent or twisted.

What does it feel like?
Most often you will feel a deep pain when the knee is loaded i.e. walking, squatting, jumping etc. as well as popping, clicking, locking or catching sensations.

What is the treatment for a meniscus tear?
Treatment depends on the severity of the tear. A minor tear can be managed conservatively through Physiotherapy and can take 6-8 weeks. This usually involves pain management and swelling strategies, as well as stretching and strengthening the muscles around the knee joint.
Severe or complex tears may take several months to resolve or may require arthroscopic surgery.
