What is pain?
Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory AND emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. How does pain work? When a potentially dangerous stimulus is detected in your tissues, it sends a message to your brain. Your brain makes a decision with all the other information it already has stored, about whether you need to be protected from that stimulus, and therefore initiates a pain response. What about persistent pain? Persistent pain is when pain continues even when the initial tissue damage has healed. In this instant, the brain and and nervous system has become sensitized and initiates the pain response at a lower threshold.
