Your Questions, Answered

What is musculoskeletal physiotherapy?
Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is a type of hands-on treatment that focuses on injuries and pain in your muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments. If something hurts when you move — whether it's your back, knee, shoulder, or anywhere else — a musculoskeletal physio can help work out why and create a plan to get you feeling better. It's used by everyone from professional athletes to office workers and retirees. At Better Bodies Physiotherapy in Palmerston North, we take a person-centred approach, which means your treatment plan is built around you — not a one-size-fits-all solution.
What treatment techniques are used in musculoskeletal physiotherapy?
Our physiotherapist uses a range of evidence-based techniques depending on what works best for your body and your condition. These include manual therapy (hands-on joint and soft tissue work), dry needling (fine needles used to release tight muscle tissue), cupping (to improve blood flow and ease muscle tension), and strapping and taping (to support and protect injured areas). You'll also receive a personalised rehabilitation exercise programme to help you recover and stay strong long term.
How much does a musculoskeletal physio appointment cost in Palmerston North?
At Better Bodies Physiotherapy, our current appointment fees are:
Initial appointment (40 minutes) Private: $90 | ACC: $45
Follow-up appointment (30 minutes) Private: $80 | ACC: $30
ACC appointments are available for eligible injuries. Lodging your ACC claim is quick and simple. No GP referral is needed — you can book online or call us on 021 0832 6319.
Can I use ACC for my physio appointment in Palmerston North?
Yes. Better Bodies Physiotherapy is a registered ACC physio clinic in Palmerston North. If your injury is covered by ACC — such as a sports injury, a fall, or a workplace accident — you may be eligible for subsidised treatment. Your initial ACC appointment is $45 and follow-ups are $30. We handle the ACC claim process for you, so you can worry less about paperwork, and focus more on your recovery. If you're unsure whether your injury qualifies, just give us a call and we'll help you work it out.
Can a physio help with sports injuries and workplace injuries in Palmerston North?
Absolutely. Whether you've rolled an ankle on the weekend, strained a muscle at the gym, or developed pain from repetitive tasks at work, musculoskeletal physiotherapy is a highly effective way to manage and recover from these types of injuries. Better Bodies Physiotherapy works with athletes from a range of sports — including our partners Basketball Manawatu, Badminton Manawatu, and Netball Manawatu — as well as everyday people managing workplace-related injuries. Many of these injuries are also ACC eligible, which means treatment may be significantly subsidised.
What is tennis elbow and can physiotherapy help?
Tennis elbow (also known as lateral epicondylalgia) is a painful condition caused by overuse of the muscles and tendons around the elbow. Despite the name, you don't have to play tennis to get it — it's common in people who do a lot of gripping, lifting, or repetitive arm movements at work or in sport. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to manage tennis elbow. At Better Bodies Physiotherapy, treatment may include manual therapy, dry needling, strapping, and a targeted exercise programme to rebuild strength and reduce pain over time.
Can Better Bodies Physiotherapy help with post-operative rehabilitation?
Yes. Post-operative rehabilitation is an important part of recovering well after surgery. Our physiotherapist will work with you at every stage — from early recovery through to rebuilding full strength and movement. We support patients recovering from procedures such as knee surgery, hip replacements, shoulder repairs, and more. Because we're based inside 360 Health & Fitness Gym at 216 Ferguson Street, we can also progress your rehab using gym equipment when the time is right — giving you access to a higher level of rehabilitation than a standard clinic setting.
