What is hip pain?
Hip pain can develop for many different reasons and may be felt in the groin, side of the hip, buttock or upper thigh. It can affect people of all ages, from active young adults to older adults with arthritis or other age-related changes.

Common causes of hip pain
Hip pain may be caused by:
  • Muscle or tendon injuries
  • Hip bursitis
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Hip impingement
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Labral injuries
  • Referred pain from the lower back
  • Sporting injuries
  • Overuse injuries

A thorough assessment helps determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Symptoms of hip pain
Depending on the cause, you may experience:
  • Pain in the groin, buttock or outer hip
  • Stiffness or reduced movement
  • Pain walking, climbing stairs or getting out of a chair
  • Pain during sport or exercise
  • Difficulty sleeping on the affected side
  • Clicking or catching sensations

How can physiotherapy help?
Treatment is tailored to your individual condition and goals and may include:
  • Education and activity modification
  • Hands-on treatment
  • Mobility exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Balance and movement retraining
  • Return-to-sport or activity planning

Our aim is to reduce pain, improve movement and help you return to the activities that matter most.

When should you see a physiotherapist?
It may be worth booking an assessment if:
  • Pain has persisted for more than a few days
  • Walking or daily activities are becoming difficult
  • You have pain during sport or exercise
  • Your symptoms keep returning
  • You're unsure what's causing your pain
